How it works

The 27 nakshatras are divided into 108 padas, and each pada has its own sound. Traditionally a child's name starts with the sound of their birth nakshatra pada, so the first syllable of a name points back to a nakshatra, and the nakshatra to a rashi.

Name rashi or birth rashi?

The name rashi (naam rashi) is a quick, traditional guide. The birth rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and the two can differ. Vedic rashis are also sidereal, so they often don't match a Western sun sign. For marriage matching, use birth details.
